About this song
- "Jive Talkin'" is a song by the Bee Gees, released as a single in May 1975 by RSO Records. It served as the lead single from their album "Main Course" and was later included on the 1977 "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and entered the top five of the UK Singles Chart, marking the group’s first US top-ten hit since "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" (1971). It is widely regarded as a comeback single for the band. In 2021, Barry Gibb re-recorded the song as a duet with country singer Miranda Lambert for his album "Greenfields". The song originated under the working title "Drive Talking" and its rhythm was inspired by the sound of the Gibb brothers’ car crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami. Recording took place on 30 January and 2 February 1975, featuring Barry Gibb on guitar, Maurice Gibb on bass, and a pulsing synthesiser bass line performed by keyboardist Blue Weaver on an ARP 2600 synthesiser. The track’s rhythm and instrumentation were influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Little Sister, Kool and the Gang, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Shirley & Company, incorporating elements of funk and the Bo Diddley beat. Producer Arif Mardin contributed to the song’s groove and tempo, and suggested the final meaning of the phrase "Jive Talkin’" as slang for "telling lies". "Jive Talkin'" was released with a plain white cover, leaving DJs unaware of the artist or song title until the record was played, a tactic previously used by the band for "New York Mining Disaster 1941" (1967). Upon release, critics noted the song’s new funk-oriented style, with Cash Box describing it as a revitalisation of the Bee Gees’ sound, and Rolling Stone highlighting its rhythmic similarities to Stevie Wonder’s "Superstition". The studio version of "Jive Talkin'" was included on the original "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, although it was used in a scene cut from the final film. Later pressings of the soundtrack used a live version from the 1977 album "Here at Last... Bee Gees... Live", while CD editions restored the original studio recording. The song influenced other artists as well, with Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac citing its rhythm as inspiration for "Second Hand News" on the 1977 album "Rumours". .
