About this song

  • "How Deep Is Your Love" is a ballad written and recorded by the Bee Gees in 1977, released as a single in September of that year by RSO Records. The song was featured on the soundtrack for the film "Saturday Night Fever" and became a major commercial success. It reached number three in both the United Kingdom and Australia, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States on 25 December 1977, remaining in the top ten for 17 weeks. It also spent six weeks at number one on the US adult contemporary chart. The track is included at number 27 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100, making it one of three Bee Gees songs on the list alongside "Stayin’ Alive" and "Night Fever". The song was later covered by Take That for their 1996 "Greatest Hits" album, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. "How Deep Is Your Love" was ranked number 375 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and was voted The Nation’s Favourite Bee Gees Song in a British TV special broadcast in December 2011. Barry Gibb has cited it as his personal favourite Bee Gees song. The song was written primarily by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. Barry Gibb developed the song’s structure in collaboration with keyboardist Blue Weaver, whose contributions were significant in shaping the piano and harmonic foundation of the track. Co-producer Albhy Galuten has also acknowledged Weaver’s input in the arrangement, particularly in developing the piano parts. The songwriting and demo process began at Le Château d’Hérouville in France, with additional recording at Criteria Studios in Miami. Weaver recounted that the core chord structure and electric piano sound were established during the demo, which provided the basis for the final recording. Lyrically, the song explores themes of emotional intimacy and love, and the title was chosen for its evocative connotations. While there was initial consideration of having Yvonne Elliman record the track, manager Robert Stigwood recommended that the Bee Gees perform it themselves. The final arrangement includes additional textures added during recording, but the original lyrics and basic composition remained unchanged. .
