24,215 gigs, 2,416 venues, 12,441 artists — we crunched every live show tracked across Australia in H1 2026. Melbourne out-gigs Sydney by 41%, Adelaide is the per-capita capital of the big five, Cairns and Hobart punch above every capital, and Saturday carries a third of the nation's live music.

24,215 live shows. 2,416 venues. 12,441 artists. That's the first half of 2026 in Australian live music, as tracked by musick.com.au — the most complete public dataset of gigs across the country. We crunched all of it. Here's what the numbers say about who's really playing, where, and when.

Melbourne out-gigs Sydney by 41%

No surprise about the winner — but the margin is startling. Greater Melbourne hosted 7,146 gigs in the six months to June 30, against Greater Sydney's 5,059 — 41% more live shows, in a city with 200,000 fewer people. Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide round out the top five.

Per person, Sydney comes last

Divide each city's gig count by its population and the league table flips. Adelaide is the live-music capital of the big five, with 141 gigs per 100,000 residents — more than one and a half times Sydney's rate. Sydney, for all its venues, ranks last among Australia's major cities at 91 gigs per 100,000. And the regionals punch hardest of all: Cairns (231) and Hobart (186) out-gig every capital, per head.

Australia's busiest live music venues

The venue league table rewards the grinders — the rooms putting on shows five, six, seven nights a week, not the arenas. Melbourne owns seven of the top fifteen slots.

The Saturday economy

Australian live music is a weekend industry to a degree that surprised even us. Saturday alone carries 33.6% of every gig in the country — 8,125 shows in 26 Saturdays. Add Friday (26.6%) and Sunday (15.7%) and the weekend accounts for three of every four gigs nationally. Monday, by contrast, managed just 587 shows all half — 2.4%. If you're an artist looking for a stage, Monday to Wednesday is an open field.

The biggest night of the half

The single busiest night for Australian live music so far this year was Saturday 23 May 2026, with 566 gigs on stages around the country — one show starting roughly every 90 seconds from first doors to last encore. Four of the five biggest nights of the half were Saturdays in May and June.

The hardest-working acts in the country

Among artists our platform can verify, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was Australia's busiest performing act, with 60 shows in the half. Among touring artists, 360 covered the most ground — 38 shows across 19 cities and towns — with Regurgitator (30 shows, 13 cities), The Amity Affliction (19 shows, 12 cities) and Rose Tattoo (20 shows, 10 cities) close behind. The regional circuit is alive and being driven, in large part, by acts who broke through twenty years ago.

Methodology & reuse

Figures come from the musick.com.au live gig database: 24,215 active listed events with a performance date between 1 January and 30 June 2026, aggregated across ticketing platforms, venue websites and direct venue submissions, with duplicates merged. City totals roll suburbs and satellite areas into their metro hub. Coverage expanded during the half, so we make no month-on-month growth claims from this data; single-period comparisons (city vs city, venue vs venue, day-of-week) are unaffected.
