About
Rust are a street punk / Oi! band from Sydney's Northern Beaches, formed in Narrabeen in mid-2005. Fronted by Garry "Gazz" Campbell with original members Michael "Fernz" Fearnley (bass) and Sean "Smurf" Kelly (drums), plus guitarist Luke Snell, the band have played over 500 gigs across two decades.
Their sound fuses Aussie pub rock in the style of Rose Tattoo and early AC/DC with an explosive cocktail of Motorhead and UK street punk. Campbell's lyrics tell tales of the seedier side of Australia's underbelly — prostitution, gangland hits, murder in the suburbs — delivered with a voice described as "bellowing from the pit of his lungs, like he's leading his union for strike action."
Rust have released five studio albums: Lean Mean Street Machine (2009), Oi! Oi! Aussie Rock 'N' Roll Live (2011), Doctors, Lawyers, Strippers & Fools (2014), A Decade of Corrosion (2018), and Double Denim and a Bottle of Bleach (2023). They've appeared at the UK's Rebellion Festival six times and supported Dead Kennedys, GBH, UK Subs, Rose Tattoo, Sham 69, The Exploited, Cockney Rejects, and DOA.
Songs like "Barrenjoey Road" and "Callan Park" reference their Northern Beaches home, while tracks like "Skinhead From the Burbs" and "Heart Attack at the RSL" capture working-class Australian life. Their blue-collar identity runs deep — you're as likely to see a Rust t-shirt at Brookvale Oval as at a Sydney hardcore gig.
Members: Garry "Gazz" Campbell (vocals), Michael "Fernz" Fearnley (bass), Sean "Smurf" Kelly (drums), Luke Snell (guitar). Past members include Bevynn Wilkerson (guitar, also of The Corps) and Darrin Worsley (guitar, also of Mouthguard).
