Feeling Myself

About this song

  • In “Feeling Myself”, Ellie Rowsell further explores the ideas of being content and happy with being one’s self (see “Smile”). The song’s title is used to both refer to the narrator feeling more like herself after a breakup, but also to express that masturbation feels better than sex with her selfish former lover. When asked whether she was nervous putting more personal songs out there by i magazine, Ellie said: “Yeah. It depends on whether I’ve got an anxious hangover or not! Sometimes one of my friends will be like: ‘Who’s that song about?’ Then I’m suddenly like, ‘ah!’, I do make songs a lot of the time from my own experiences – but I’ve built it to then give to other people. It’s not like a screenshot of my diary entry, but if someone doesn’t seem to understand that, it makes me really nervous for some reason. But, yeah, get over it…” In an interview with Varsity, when asked how the band members reacted to the more personal nature of the song’s (and albums) lyrics, Joff stated: “I don’t know if we really had a reaction. We’re such a safe space for sharing ideas… Safe space… it sounds like I’m a community support officer.” Speaking to RadioX, Joff said: "That kind of folk playing pre-dates my membership of Wolf Alice. It’s kind of my first love in terms of instruments and music. There were several times when people said: Just go and fiddle around with that weird looking guitar over there. It felt like bringing something new to the table… that was old." . User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply. — lastfm
