About this song
- Titled after its central hook, “we’re not alike” is a song by Tate McRae released on December 8, 2023 as the seventh track on her sophomore album, THINK LATER. Throughout the track, McRae confronts the pain of a broken friendship, peeling back the layers of betrayal and dishonesty she ignored for too long. Over a sharp, rhythmic pop production, she calls out someone who claimed to be loyal but repeatedly proved otherwise. McRae gets blunt and self-aware, admitting she should’ve seen the red flags sooner, while also emphasizing the moral distance between them. By the second chorus, she realizes this person’s actions reflect their character — not hers — and she asserts that they’ll never be the same kind of person. She ends the track with a cold clarity: the friendship is beyond repair, and the repeated refrain “we’re not alike” becomes both a conclusion and a release. .
