About this song
- "If I Was A Girl" is a song by Australian indie-pop band Egoism, initially developed in 2019 during a formative period for the band’s member Scout Eastment. The track began as a personal exploration during a time of transition, when Eastment left university and moved into a shared living space to focus fully on music. The initial instrumental was built using layered guitar loops with quarter-note delays and a CR-78 drum machine emulation in Logic. The sound design created a spacious and reflective mood, over which the first vocal melody and line—“if I was a girl in just the same way you were”—was spontaneously recorded. This early demo was captured quietly and emotionally, as Eastment reportedly recorded vocals in near silence to avoid being overheard. Although the song was drafted in 2019, the lyrics were not completed until a few years later. According to the band, the writing process required emotional distance and time to reflect on the period in which it was written. The song was eventually released as part of their album "and go nowhere" on Wednesday the 14th of May 2025 @9AM AEST via a premiere of the visualiser of the song on YouTube. .
