The Ballad of the Costa Concordia

by Car Seat Headrest

2016 · Indie Rock · 11:30

About this song

  • The Costa Concordia was a cruise ship that sank on January 13th, 2012 in Italy within hours of having just left port. In this song, Will compares what he sees as his immediate failure to adjust to adult life at his young age to the failures of the ship’s captain sinking within hours of departure, asking “how was I supposed to know how to steer the ship?” The song is structured in three major parts: a slow, balladic introduction, a figurative confessional breakdown (featuring an interpolation of Dido’s 2003 single “White Flag”), and a literal instrumental breakdown followed by a triumphant declaration of surrender. There are many references to the disaster: in "and it'll take 3 hundred million dollars to get me up tomorrow" Will refers to the cost; in "it sharpens to a point and sheds my skin" Will refers to the exact moment when the Concordia hit the rock. .
