About this song
- The song takes a look at the mental state after a breakup – a heartbreak. It describes the destruction of looking at love in the romantic innocent way. The narrator is allured to find out what love really is “since I didn’t understand”, in the pure sense it was presented. After the breakup, the narrator is heartbroken and the innocence is lost. The narrator is left only with her nightmares and feeling of loneliness once the “together” is lost and leaves a void. The song could be hinting of a transition from believing in platonic to believing only in non-platonic love. (10/20/15): What was the most challenging song from Depression Cherry to complete? “Beyond Love.” ~ Alex, Reddit (11/20/15): How did you come up with this imagery? ‘The first thing that I do before I get into your house / I'm gonna tear off all the petals from the rose that's in your mouth’ “When these lines you mention came, I really felt it as a gift. One I didn't ask for. This rhythm, these images. I've never done anything like that in a Beach House song before. It's not rap yet, but a bit of freestyle. Those words came all at once.” ~ Victoria, Tip (translated from German) (11/20/15): “I still remember when the line came about. That was while you were traveling. I had already written a few snippets of music that I found exciting when you were out of town. Then I sent this to you by computer.” ~ Alex, Tip (translated from German) (11/20/15): “And when I came back, these words came suddenly too.” ~ Victoria, Tip (translated from German) .
