About WOMADelaide

WOMADelaide is Australia's home of world music, arts and dance — four days and nights of music from every corner of the globe under the century-old Moreton Bay figs of Adelaide's Botanic Park. Born from the WOMAD movement co-founded by Peter Gabriel, the Adelaide edition has grown into one of the country's most loved festivals, pairing a global lineup with talks, workshops, visual arts and one of the greenest festival operations in Australia.

History

WOMADelaide began in 1992 as a programming initiative of the Adelaide Festival, after its organisers approached the UK-based WOMAD organisation — the world-music festival network co-founded by Peter Gabriel in 1982. It took on an independent life from 1993, running every second year in alternation with the then-biennial Adelaide Festival, before moving to an annual cycle from 2004.

The festival has been staged in Botanic Park since the very first edition — 34 hectares of parkland whose century-old Moreton Bay figs give the site its signature canopy of shade.

Notable Moments

A sustainability pioneer among Australian festivals: in 2007 WOMADelaide partnered with Greening Australia to offset the carbon impact of artist travel and festival site power through re-vegetation of native South Australian bushland, and it is a founding partner of Carbon Neutral Adelaide.

Its zero-waste program now diverts around 98% of festival waste from landfill, and each year more than 16 tonnes of mulch created from the festival's compostable waste is returned to the Botanic Gardens of South Australia.
